This special edition of Connaissances des Arts is dedicated to Johann Heinrich Füssli, a singular artist of the 18th century. Inspired by numerous literary themes, the artist had a great admiration for Shakespearean theater, which he associated with an ancestral pagan imagery populated by demons. Nourished by the strict rules of neoclassicism, Füssli advocated a freedom of painting and bypassed the norms to explore a dark romanticism marked by tormented and violent passions.
